If you dream of reaching Machu Picchu on foot, two routes stand out: the legendary Inca Trail and the spectacular Salkantay Trek. Both are memorable, but they offer very different experiences. Here is how to choose.
Inca Trail
This iconic four-day route follows stone paths built by the Incas. It passes archaeological sites such as Wiñay Wayna before entering Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) at dawn.
- Duration: 4 days / 3 nights (a shorter two-day option is also available).
- Difficulty: moderate to challenging, including the 4,215-meter (13,829-foot) Dead Woman’s Pass.
- Permits: required and very limited; book several months ahead.
Salkantay Trek
This wilder, more varied route circles the imposing Salkantay peak (6,271 meters / 20,574 feet). It moves from high mountains toward cloud forest, with beautiful Humantay Lake along the way.
- Duration: 4 to 5 days.
- Difficulty: challenging, with the 4,630-meter (15,190-foot) Salkantay Pass.
- Permits: no special trekking permit, allowing greater date flexibility.
Which should you choose?
Choose the Inca Trail for history, archaeology, and the classic arrival through Inti Punku. Choose Salkantay for mountain and cloud-forest scenery and more flexible dates.
